Hurricanes raise $23,000 for Canadian Cancer Society

Sat, January 16th, 2010

Lethbridge, AB – The night ended as a 3-0 loss for the Lethbridge Hurricanes on home ice as they fell to the Calgary Hitmen. But in the end, everyone came out winners especially the Canadian Cancer Society. Saturday marked the end of the 1st annual Lethbridge Hurricanes “Pink in the Rink” Event - a two game event in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. In total, the Hurricanes were able to raise an amazing total of $23,000 dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event was headlined by a “Pink in the Rink” Jersey Auction, held over the two games for the Hurricanes specially designed “Pink in the Rink” game worn jerseys. Proceeds from this part of the evening alone, combined with the Hurricanes Puck Toss netted a total over $10,000.

But it was a player driven initiative that made up the largest portion of the fund raising, as the Canes players all agreed that at a price of $200 per person - the players would shave their heads in support of this cause. With volunteers collecting donations at the game and an online donation page, the Hurricanes players, coaches and even some administration were able to gross over $13,000 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society to bring the total to a whopping $23,000.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes would like to thank all the volunteers and administrators of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ward Brothers Construction for being a game night sponsor of the event, the ENMAX Centre staff, the volunteer hair dressers from Purely Inspired Salon and all of the game night staff for their help in making this possible. Last, but certainly not least, the hockey club would like to send out a thank you to all of the fans for showing their support in the fight against cancer.

“This was a great event for everyone involved and certainly something we hope to keep building on for many more seasons” said newly shaven Canes Business Manager Geoff Stewart “The players should get a lot of the credit as the head shave was something they pushed for - and obviously as we can see, it was a huge success.”
